Why I Love Canva as a Passive Product Creator

passive income

If you’ve browsed my Instagram page or scoped out the rest of the blog, you’ve probably noticed that I love Canva. So much so that I built a whole dang business on selling Canva templates and graphics to support entrepreneurs!

That love even led me to offer one-on-one services as a business strategist — and even launching The Passive Income Agency — to help other biz owners figure out a plan to bring in passive income like I did.

But why Canva instead of some other program or tool? How did Canva help me grow and scale my business? And can it do the same for you? I have all the answers to those questions, my friends. Keep reading to learn more!

All about Canva and selling passive products

If you’re new here, well, hi! Let’s cover all the bases first before we dive into how Canva can help you add additional revenue streams for your business.

Here’s a quick primer on Canva*: Canva is a free online graphic design tool that lets anyone create templates, logos, event invitations, ads — you name it. No graphic design knowledge or experience required. The learning curve is minimal, and you can create high-quality digital products on the cheap.

That’s why you’ve probably noticed so many Canva templates for sale these days. Even though Canva is simple and easy to use, not everyone likes to design stuff from scratch, and not everyone has the time. So, they buy Canva templates that are already made. (If you’re a small business owner, you’ve likely had to delegate tasks or hire someone to take work off your plate…because we just can’t do everything on our own!)

And that, my friend, is how I define selling passive products. You create a product once, and then this product sells without needing hours of commitment or upkeep on your end. Passive products add extra streams of income to your biz, giving you more freedom and time to devote elsewhere.

“Hold up. How can I do this for my business? And why should I listen to you??” Fair question! Let me explain my history with Canva and how it helped me get to where I am today.

Canva and I go way back

I’ve been in the entrepreneurship game since 2008. (Oof, that sounds like a long time, doesn’t it?) I knew I had always wanted to work myself, but at the beginning, I had no clue what that meant for me or what I’d actually do.

There was a stint in food styling. Health coaching. Home and kitchen styling. Basically, it felt like I was ping-ponging from one industry to another, trying to find one I could build a viable business around.

That’s when I realized that I needed to look deeper. Rather than focus on industry, I realized that I could build a business around my passion for form, function, and beauty. In other words, graphic design!

In 2016 — which somehow also feels like a long time ago — I founded the Canva Template Shop, which has grown beyond my wildest expectations. I had been designing for clients since 2015 and using Canva for my own business since 2013, so it really felt like a natural progression! Years later, I launched the Canva Creator Kit, so I can help you create the business you’ve always dreamed of, too.

How Canva can help you boost your revenue

I bet you’re thinking, “That’s great and all, but can Canva really help me bring in more revenue? If selling Canva products is so easy and everyone’s doing it, how can I stand out from the crowd?” Another fair question!

The long answer to whether the market is too saturated to sell your own Canva products can be found in this blog. The short answer? It’s not too saturated! Because you are a unique person with unique skills and ideas and, therefore, you will create a unique Canva product. Whether it’s unique in its design or who it serves, I promise you, someone out there is looking for what you’re designing.

Now, on to the money-making part!

You can make money without hustling 24/7

No matter what you do as a small business owner — whether you’re a lifestyle blogger or photographer or public speaker — you can only work as often as you’re available. Which means your free time limits your money-making possibilities, right?

That’s true for what you do on the daily if you’re a service provider or shop owner. But that’s the beauty of selling passive income products like Canva templates. You put in the hours upfront to create your product…and then that’s basically it. It sells on its own.

Yes, you’ll still need to invest a few hours marketing your products and talking to customers who have issues or questions. And if you’re completely new to Canva, it’ll take time getting used to create your products. Before you know it, though, you’ll start raking in sales without having to lift a finger.

You can sell Canva products to anyone

Even after a global pandemic changed the game in 2020, a whopping 5.4 million new business applications were filed in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s one million more than the number filed in 2020!

All those millions of new businesses? They need graphics for their website, social media feeds, blogs, email newsletters…the list goes on and on. These new business owners need those graphics to promote and advertise what they’re selling, and they may not have the skills, energy, or bandwidth to do it on their own. (Or hire a pricey graphic designer.)

So, who’s in the market for the Canva templates you’re selling? Basically, anyone who has a business or is about to launch one is your next potential customer.

Ready to get started with Canva?

Learning that you can evolve and scale your business by selling Canva products is super exciting. While that excitement can push you to take the next step and actually get started, you may not know what you should do first. And you may not know what next step is right for you and your business.

Canva is just ONE way to create passive income, but it is one of my favorite ways. Why? Because you can start reeling in money by selling Canva products, without taking hours of extra work away from your primary business or daily schedule.
